Record your first journey

In this section you will record a user journey, replay it and save it as a project.

Create a project

  1. Start Pulse. The project picker opens.
  2. Click Create Project. The Tests view opens with an empty project.

You can also create a project at any time with New Project (Ctrl+N) in the application menu.

Record a test

  1. In the Tests tab, click + next to the test list (Create New Test) and name the test, for example search.
  2. In the address bar above the browser panel, type the address of the site to test and press Enter (Navigate to URL).
  3. Click Record in the toolbar.
  4. Use the site in the browser panel as a visitor would: click links and buttons, fill in forms. Each action becomes a step in the command list.
  5. Click Record again to stop recording.

Hovers are recorded too: resting the pointer on a clickable element records a mouse over step. How long the pointer must rest is the Mouse Over Delay of the recorder settings.

While recording, right-click an element in the browser panel to add an explicit wait on it: Record Wait For Element Present, Visible, Text or Editable (shortcuts 1 to 4).

Replay it

Select the test and click Play. Pulse replays every step in the browser panel and shows the result in the log panel below it: passed steps turn green, the failing step turns red with the error.

To find out why a step fails, use Play Next Step to run the test one command at a time, or lower the playback speed with the speed button. See Playback.

Fix a step

Select a step in the command list to open it in the step editor:

  • Command — what the step does; hover over the field for the description of the command
  • Target — usually the element the step acts on, written as a locator such as id=search or css=button.submit
  • Value — the text to type, the value to check or the variable to store

The command reference lists every command with its target and value.

Save the project

Click Save Project (Ctrl+S) and choose where to save the .side file. Save Project As… (Ctrl+Shift+S) saves a copy under another name. The next time Pulse starts, reopen the project from Recent Projects in the project picker.
